First War Era National Borders
687 - 695 AD


    This map shows the main playing region of Verdania as it was during the First Shadow Knight/Damocles War. Several of the borders shown are as they were during and before the war, in which after the war a severe rearrangement occured as the Shadow Knights wiped several nations literally off the map. For a sense of scale from North to South (Top to Bottom) is 2,430 miles. From East to West (Side to Side) is 1,950 miles. Nations, Dominions & Territories

1: The Damocles Empire - While it was really the "Damocles Kingdom", historians have noted a rise towards Imperialism beginning around the turn of the 7th century. Also after the First War, several history books of Damocles were edited to remove the term of Kingdom and replace it with Empire. By 680, people either called Damocles a Kingdom to represent peaceful, noble ideals or an Empire to represent the might of the growing military. After the fall of the Sirius Confederation, Gregory Thorin of Damocles issued the Imperial Charter which allocated more funding to the military, united several of Damocles's independent territories under one domain, placed more power into the Senate and the Military and prepared Damocles for the threat of the Shadow Knight Empire. While this move placed a more military focus on Damocles, many attribute this act as the reason why Damocles won the war. The airships built, the Navy ships launched, and the Armies raised insured victory over the Shadow Knight Empire.

The years before the War saw Damocles building up, but with no real defensive focus. However as Shadow Knight troops annexed land north of Damocles, all military focus was pushed to the "Northern Front", an expanse of land over 1,000 miles that formed the main battle zone between Damocles and Shadow Knight forces. 

During the War, Damocles was a nation of just under five million people with a Military Force around 480,000 soldiers & officers, a Navy of 60-80 Ships and a standing Fleet of just under 200 airships with most of them being the Defender class cruisers. However as Shadow Knight troops made landfall north of the Damocles border, Damocles entered into a war-time alliance pact with Dewwillow, Dantania, Axius, Maelglia, Muldune, Sureal, Terangoth, the Broken Lands, Mercalax and Vernalla as several nations sent troops to aid Damocles in this time of peril.

Damocles survived the war intact, and much stronger. She would go on to claim the lands the Shadow Knights used, as well as the rich mineral deposits found in the mountains. However the war took a massive toll on lives, and Damocles gained several former Shadow Knights as citizens as the Shadow Knight military abandoned Verdanians it took prisoner and people from it's own worlds it forced into relocating to aid in the war effort.

2: The Axius Kingdom - Axius was a prospering trade nation at the start of the War, which just under three million citizens in her lands. As the Shadow Knights first entered, Axius sent around 150,000 Army troops, 175 Navy ships and forty Airships to the Northern Front in Damocles. Axius soon came under attack herself, as Shadow Knight troops snuck airships over the mountains of central Axius to strike at the city of Waypoint just north third of the capital of Tantallon. Seeing them more as a threat now, Axius increased the amount of aid given to Damocles however several Shadow Knight strikes along the north Axius border took a serious toll in lives.

Axius came out of the war with a great loss of lives, however more riches as Damocles repaid Axius in full for her aid in this War. Part of this aid came in gold, silver, platinum, quartz and airship technology as Damocles handed over a dozen Defenders into Axius service.

3: Shadow Knight Territory - Shadow Knight forces rushed in, claiming a zone spanning 250,000 square miles and situated along the north borders of Damocles, Dewwillow, Axius and Maelglia as well as the eastern borders of Sureal, Muldune and Greyhelm. Over the years of the War, close to three and a half million Shadow Knights were relocated to this zone from the worlds of Cerebus, Diabolius Prime, Hostka and recently conquered Sirius.peaceful monarchy w

8: Udai - While a Damocles territory, Udai was allowed freedom to run it's own affairs in return for a tax (20% of all tax income) to Damocles. As the Imperial Charter Act took effect, Udai's borders were removed as well as her own autonomy and she was made just another province in the rising Empire. peaceful monarchy w

11: The Elven Kingdom of Therilmoria - In the early days, the elves of Aeris were divided into two camps of the Wood Elves/High Elves and the Gray Elves. The Gray elves wanted more isolation from their kin and from humanity and thus moved south past Vernalla and into a stretch of land between Vernalla and the sparsely settled human lands which would later become known as "The Broken Lands". peaceful monarchy w

The Kingdom of Dantania - A peaceful monarchy which is well known for it's exotic foods and regal way of life. The ruling kingdom has consisted of members of the Dantania family line and it has remained this way since the Kingdom's founding over 700 years ago.

The Damocles Empire - The Damocles Empire boasts the most impressive magic-based technology and a mighty fleet of airships. Damocles has always been and still remains a major political, economic and military power and influence on events in the region.

The Axius Kingdom - The Axius Kingdom, long known as a excellent land of trade and commerce, fell into disarray following an alliance with Kardius in which it was greatly taken advantage of and suffered a great downfall. Following a brief seizure by the Dorandus Cult as well as two Shadow Knight occupations of the capital, Axius is now rebuilding itself with Queen Constance Drake on the throne in the home city of Tantallon.

Nore Quenderin - Built on the ashes of Ven'Tul, this very young nation is seeking to become the new homeland of the Elfs and is benefiting from very cordial relations between itself and the Damocles Empire. Settled by elfs who were tricked into an exodus from Dewwillow by a Drow of the Shadow Knight Empire, the lands were ravaged by dragons lead by Darben Darktalon and the once beautiful forests turned to ash. In 715 AD Damocles Fleet forces lead by Admiral Stormgren removed the draconic threat and claimed what remains of the nation as a Damocles Protectorate then the following year, Crown Prince Anduril claimed it as a new nation and was given it's independence.

The Nation of Greyhelm - Considered a backwater nation by those possessing magi-tech, this Kingdom has long been the source of controversial trouble ranging from silently supporting the Shadow Knight Empire during the First War, to brief border skirmishes with Axius and Damocles. Very little is known of the lands save for it's rule by a monarchy and it's nearly total lack of any magical technology.

Kender Archipelago - A collection of islands that serves as the home for the Kender race as well as several other demi-human races. No official government has claimed the area as only the mapmakers and several other nations see it as a legitimate nation. The area is protected by a united coalition between Vernalla, Dantania, Axius, Terangoth and Damocles forces.

The Nation of Terangoth - This nation is a main spot for pirates who practice their trade out in the local oceans. Terangoth is mostly lawless and is usually avoided by respectable merchant ships for fear of the frequent in-dock thefts that occur. Despite the bad reputation Terangoth maintains civil relations with several nations and due to the brief but prosperous rule of Zarak Scythe, Terangoth has managed to form a triple alliance with Dantania and Damocles.

The Vernalla Republic -An agricultural society, based on commerce, ruled by a council headed up by Rehel, though, officially, he doesn't have the power, it is in equal shares among the council members. Vernalla has had a chaotic time in the last several decades due to a few occurrences of it supporting two occupations into Tantallon as well as aiding the Krarthian Union's bid to conquer Damocles. It's border with Damocles to the north of Vernalla is a delicate area, and heavily patrolled by both sides.

The Verax Empire - The frogman race has expanded northwards from their homelands of Imggok Voghkh and into the lands here brutally conquering and subjugating any and all in their path. The Verax Empire is a strong military regime which airship and magical advances are an even match for those of the Damocles Empire.

The Kingdom of Roshack - Roshack has recently came out of a brutal occupation by Shadow Knight forces and was given it's independence in 717 AD after occupying Damocles liberation forces found it too difficult to maintain order here. The people of Roshack behave very oddly compared to people of other lands, living in a society that either worships Illiara or praises deitycide. People here act with a very brutal, manner about them and all seem to exhibit similar body characteristics such as jet black hair. A few sages claim that those of Roshack are not humans, but Verdane. The lands are known for their natural wealth of metallic minerals and gemstone deposits.

The Isle of Dread - This island, located within some of the most violent parts of the Sea of Eradina, is steeped deep in myth and legend. Only a few brave groups have voyaged here and returned to tell the tale. Officially, this island is marked by the Damocles Fleet as a no fly zone as well as the Damocles Navy as a hazardous area. Why however, this is not exactly known but legends persist that this island was once home of a great civilization and it's riches are rumored to still be awaiting any brave enough to claim it.
